Sourcing Custom Dog Travel Mats From China: A Buyer’s Checklist

Sourcing Custom Dog Travel Mats From China: A Buyer’s Checklist

A dog travel mat is bought twice: once by the customer who folds it into a car boot, a hotel room or a tent, and once by the freight forwarder who quotes it by the space its cartons fill. The first sale runs on how the mat carries; the second on how it packs. The packed size and the care claim are the items most often left out.

The short answer

A travel mat is a volume product, so two sizes go on the spec sheet: the size the customer uses and the folded or rolled size the carton must carry. Pick the construction by use case — self-warming retains body heat with no power, a plain layered mat protects at the flattest pack, a padded build cushions at the cost of bulk — and confirm fabric, thickness and the care claim on your spec sheet. From 200 pcs per model, samples US$25–40 in 5 days, credited in full against the first order.

What a travel mat actually solves

The product answers four situations at once: the back seat, a hotel or rental floor that is not the dog’s own, a tent on cold ground, and the sofa between trips. One product covering all four is why it sells.

Every one of those situations puts the mat in motion, though: a customer buying for the car is judging whether it folds small enough to live in the boot, not the area in use. The open size is the product; the packed size is the promise — both belong in your brief from day one.

Self-warming, plain layer or padded: choosing the construction

The three builds are not a ladder from basic to advanced — each trades something for something, and the use case picks the winner.

Construction What it is What it trades
Self-warming A reflective layer that sends the dog’s body heat back; no plug, no battery Warms only where the dog lies — comfort, not a heat source
Plain layered mat Face fabric, a simple middle layer, a backing The flattest pack and simplest cost; no warmth claim
Padded or quilted Extra middle loft for cushioning Comfort on hard surfaces, paid for in packed volume

The mechanism is set out in how self-warming pet mats work; the listing therefore describes retention, not heating. Layer materials, thickness and fabric weights are confirmed on your spec sheet.

The spec sheet items that decide reorders

On a volume product the spec sheet carries commercial weight: your carton count, freight quote and listing are built on it.

  • Open size — the working dimension in the units your market sells in; the number your photos and size chart repeat.
  • Packed size — the folded or rolled dimensions, with the fold method written beside them so the published number is reproducible.
  • Face fabric and backing — the layer against the dog, the layer under the mat; names and weights confirmed on your spec sheet, not assumed from a photo.
  • The care claim — settle the machine-washable wording before any label is printed; a care instruction the construction cannot support repeats as a complaint.
  • Pack format — polybag, box, hangtag, barcode; the format sets the carton count, which feeds the freight. The options are compared in retail-ready packaging for pet products.

Why packed volume moves your freight maths

Travel mats are light for their size, and freight bills the space the cartons occupy rather than the weight. That is why the sea-or-air question usually settles before any rate arrives, as covered in sea freight versus air for pet products.

Two levers sit at the spec stage: the folded size every carton is built around, and whether the mats share a shipment with the rest of your range. A mat order produced alongside other items can leave as one consignment — the saving set out in consolidating orders into one shipment. Once the cartons are sealed, both levers are fixed.

From sample to first order: the checkpoints

  • Fold the sample yourself. Roll it and measure the packed size the way a customer would; if it does not match the number you plan to publish, change the spec before the run.
  • Run the wash once. If the listing will say machine washable, wash the sample as the label describes; the approved sample becomes the inspection reference.
  • Log the print. Approved sample, Pantone references and pack format recorded together, so label, bag and mat match what you approved.
  • Match the quantity to what one model can prove. Mats start from 200 pcs per model, samples US$25–40 in 5 days and credited in full against the first order; the quantity logic is in MOQ explained for pet products.

Samples and production run through our production partner, a pet product operation since 2018.

Questions we get asked

What is the minimum order for a custom travel mat?

From 200 pcs per model, with open size, packed size and colourway agreed on the quotation. Samples are US$25–40, prepared in 5 days and credited in full against the first order.

Should I launch self-warming, plain or padded?

Match the construction to the use case, not a ranking: self-warming for warmth retention, a plain mat to win on pack and price, padded where cushioning is the promise. The listing describes what the construction does; details are confirmed on your spec sheet.

Can I advertise the mat as machine washable?

Only with wording the construction supports, confirmed on your spec sheet before the label is printed. Agree the care wording with the sample, run the wash before approving, and keep the published claim identical.

How do I keep shipping costs down on a bulky mat?

Packed size is the lever you control: a fold and construction that compress smaller fill fewer cartons, and cartons are what freight quotes on. Solve it at the spec stage, not after the cartons are sealed.

Tell us the use case — car, hotel, camping or home — and we will come back with the construction we would build, the sizes for the spec sheet and the sample timeline for your launch. Start from the self-warming travel mat range, or reach us through the contact page — one business day for a reply.
